WITCHES' ALMANAC

An overgrown pure black cat stood determinedly in my path yesterday in the middle of a familiar neighborhood grown over with the uncanny moss of damp light that comes between intermittent rain showers.

Or, that unique composure of being drawn out of sleep by crystalline awareness of a faucet in the darkened bathroom opening and closing with a metal hiss. Nothing there + the room’s not empty.

There’s an edge of hysteria to all the vividly dying foliage that creeps up against the steady barriers of peripheral vision - you could just sink into the ground all soupy proteins at any second, sliding neatly into earthy pores.

It’s been a magical season so far. A dose of ritual immersion on the equinox can’t have hurt, + a certain occasion exactly one month in can’t but sustain the mood …

I'VE BEEN BAD...

Magical week split between prowling multilevel esoteric shops in the most marine recesses of New England + a fortuitous (I swear) full-frontal run-in with Folsom St Fair 2012 ... all of which but ornamentation splayed attractively around a Black Mamba centerpiece idol.

The result plus some more prosaic matters is, your generally faithful lady artist has been somewhat absent. No longer, of course - guilt owned + penance paid, I shall resume revelation of the work that has somehow gone on despite (because of?) successive days of rarefied titillation ... xx

Here, immoderate glee at the emergence of excessively early Hallowe'en paraphernalia + arcane fixation on consuming the darkest, most subterranean and occult of plants as a staple diet. In the space of a day: empathizing with a growling rubber werewolf that shivers + spits jets of suspect-looking warm water (an intentional function? the display box worryingly failed to elaborate) + going into paroxysms of delight at the discovery of black string beans to accompany purplish-dark kale in a thoroughly eldritch meal, like mutual biting + digestion, of + by the earth itself.

Thrilled by all the inquiries and messages I have been receiving of late, I welcome and indeed encourage yet more, especially from those who might wish to share a glimpse of their own, sympathetically-inclined artworks - ever eager for such communicative stimuli!  + more, more to come ... xx

Small signs of the approaching dying-off of fall - the cheerful and life-affirming decay of which season can only be likened appropriately in my mind to the intoxicating + horrific stench of low-tide - keep straying into my path, my personal favorite thus far being a great ovoid mass, reaching a height midway to my knee, of bright orange mushrooms on someone's carefully manicured lawn: an orgiastic eruption or expansion obviously made lividly manifest overnight and already in the throes of fragrant self-digestion after what I can only assume was a brief and furious mass coupling.  My delight at such uncouth proliferation knows no bounds...

On which note, I persist in my own creeping occupation of space and matter, a very central feature of which process is enjoying correspondence and inquiries both from those interested in the paintings and garments displayed here (thank you for all your lovely messages!) as well as from those engaged in sympathetic forms of creation - I would love to hear from you + see your work!  This witch seeks a more populous coven ... xx

Persistent rain produces a very grumpy sweat factory owner/operator/employee with a terrible humidity-plagued mane of unruly red hair.  Somehow, regardless of this debilitatingly unbecoming situation, work continues to get done, and even get done animatedly, spurred on by small everyday Magical happenings: recently, the rediscovery of a genuine hagstone found on the beach when I was two years-old, hidden away knowingly for my future use in waxy yellow tissue + a small spiky wicker basket by my grandfather. A prized addition to the arsenal of charms.

Such witchery being an motivator rather than an effective distraction, there is vastly more to appear here in the near future! xx

Diversion! Have been hard at work assembling the next edition of Cut Hands garments here in the trusty one-girl sweatshop/atelier (+ for the time being we've some of our limited edition shirts from the first run still available), getting utterly abruptly lost in obscure ethnobotanical inquiry, being immersed in hysterically exciting new sounds, irrevocably spooking the next male generation after agreeing to accompany my uncannily identical twin sister on a job babysitting an erstwhile set of young brothers ... and welcoming a delightfully bitchy little calico addition to the cat coven.

A busy busy week, all the work of which on my part, while most exciting, pales terribly in comparison to the beautiful experience of having been ceremoniously gifted a very dead, exsanguinated mouse (dropped in the grass in gory prostration at my feet) by a master huntress neighbor cat. Poor little mouse, yet I can't fault the feline's gesture: her obvious and justified lack of regard for my lethal potential complemented charmingly by her effort, at once maternal and, perhaps more pointedly, gleefully dominant, to help me along in the matter. I do appreciate being so eloquently reminded of my place now and again...

I can't claim the highly alluring trait of ambidexterity, a fact which is normally bothersome only in the realm of hypothetical musings about 'dubious functions one might be able to perform manually given precisely equal use of the left and right hands,' but which enters the realm of practical complaints when, as now, favored hands and fingers bear sore traces of continual jabbing with sewing needles.  A necessary stigmata wrought by one-girl garment production and, all moaning aside, an interesting sensory elaboration to routine activity.  Even better: those with an interest in the material rather than exclusively fleshly results of said labor shall be satisfied tomorrow ... xx

Splitting time between lying on the bathroom tiles in a detached mollusk imitation, visualizing slimy limblessness, when the heat becomes too much, and the violent embodiment and celebration thereof that's come with breathlessly following Olympic women's boxing: the most viscerally moved I've been since experiencing my first underground live fight, convulsively making bruising grabs at my neighboring girl friend's knee - the absolute finest in Amazon entertainment!

In the same way that they grow heavy winter coats, the cats seem to assume attributes of wildness when the summer is thick and green and feral - they're stalking around with saucer eyes and tails grown several inches longer, claws unsheathed, and so am I ... days stuck into Mary Daly's supremely witchy Wickedary plus evenings immersed in an unlikely viewing assemblage of Agnetha Fältskog via Maya Deren and Barbara Hammer are hardly a cure for such terminal concupiscence I suppose ...
